When he went to investigate, he found the room covered in black dust and rock fragments, and a sulfurlike odor hung in the air. There was also a foot-wide hole in the roof. Earlier in the day, 60 observers across the northeast United States had witnessed a 117-pound meteor streaking across the sky and breaking down into small chunks, including the one that broke into the New Jersey bedroom and burst into pieces. The homeowner...quickly sealed the evidence in glass jars...2 pounds of the meteorite’s fragments... preserved in unusually pristine condition.... On the two-year anniversary of the impact, a team of researchers revealed that the meteorite contained many organic chemicals, including amino acids, thought to be key ingredients for the emergence of life on Earth . The scientists also found high salt mineral concentrations, suggesting the asteroid once contained the liquid water brines necessary for these molecules to develop. ...The findings add additional data to theories that asteroids may have brought the building blocks of life to Earth billions of years ago. New York Times article excerpt: At 11:17 a.m. on July 16, 2024, an asteroid hurtled across the sky above New York City. ...NASA said that the rock..., estimated to be roughly a foot long [a mass of 115 pounds], was so small that it was “incapable of surviving all the way to the ground.” During its fiery plunge through Earth’s atmosphere, it was thought to have been completely vaporized. The owners of a house in Hillsborough, N.J., would have begged to differ. At 11:20 a.m. ...a man working in his home office was rudely interrupted. “I heard an immense crash and felt the house shake,” he said. ...he made his way to the main bedroom. “I open the door, and I see a hole in the ceiling above my bed,” he said. The air smelled like rotten, sulfurous eggs, mingled with a fine dust. There appeared to be black soot on every horizontal and vertical surface. When the man glanced at his pillow, he saw several onyx-colored rocks. ...Most of it was annihilated as it sped through the atmosphere at 32,000 miles per hour. But a sizable fragment completed its journey to New Jersey, and the homeowners spent weeks carefully gathering roughly three pounds of extraterrestrial material. ...Now, a new study published on Wednesday in the journal Science Advances reveals that the space rock...contains complex organic molecules and tantalizing evidence of salty water — ingredients that life, as we know it, thrives on. Early universe’s ‘little red dots’ may be black hole stars

Since NASA’s JWST observatory began peering into the distant universe in 2022, it has discovered a rash of “little red dots”—hundreds of them, shining within the first billion years of the 13.8-billion-year-old universe, so small and red that they defied conventional explanation. Only in the past few months has a picture begun to emerge. This ‘Galaxy That Wasn’t’ Never Bore Any Stars

The almost-galaxy is about 14 million light-years from Earth. It was the ninth cloud found to be associated with a nearby spiral galaxy, leading to its serendipitous name: Cloud-9.
